Aleppo, located in northern Syria, is the largest city in Syria and the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous governorate in Syria. With a population of 2,301,570 (2005 official estimate), it is also the largest city in the Levant. Aleppo is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world; it has known human settlement for at least 4,000 years, since the second millennium BC.
